Fear is your heart trying to protect you
Being scared isn’t cowardice, and it isn’t overthinking. When something we care about might be lost, or the road ahead is hard to see, the heart tightens on its own, telling us to be careful. It feels awful, but what it is really trying to do is keep you, and the people and things you care about, safe.
In the Morning Room, let yourself be somewhere safe
Outside the Morning Room window the sky grows lighter little by little, slowly, with no rush. Plant your feet on the floor, look around for five things you can see, touch the blanket on your lap, and remind yourself that right now you are safe. Or write on a bedside note what you are afraid of, then one thing you most want to tell yourself right now, and fold it away so it stays only on your device. What you fear may never happen, and even if it does, you don’t have to face it alone. If this fear stays heavy for a long time, keeps you from sleeping or going out, or leaves your heart racing often, it may help to talk with someone you trust or a professional.
