Being compared

When you keep getting compared to others, you don’t have to win to be worth something

Maybe your family brought up someone else’s kid again, the school they got into, the salary, the wedding, the baby. Maybe friends and coworkers seem to be moving ahead one by one while you are still in the same place. Or maybe no one said anything at all, and it was you, late at night, scrolling through other people’s updates and growing quieter with each one. You know everyone’s path is different, but “look at them” still echoes inside, and it makes you feel that whatever you do, you fall a little short.

Being compared hurts because you have been trying too

Comparison stings because it squeezes years of your effort into a single ranking. Other people only see results. They don’t see what you have been through, where you started, or what you are carrying. And what you see of others is usually only the side they choose to show. If it hurts, it isn’t because you are petty or not good enough. It is because you are taking your own life seriously too.

In the Seaside Loft, spend time only with who you were yesterday

Outside the Seaside Loft window is the sea, and every wave rolls in at its own pace, none of them racing the others. Write on a bedside note the thing you have been compared on most lately, then three small things you have already done that only you know about, and fold it away so it stays only on your device. Or mute, for a while, the updates that leave you feeling worse. Your path has its own seasons. If comparison leaves you feeling worthless for a long time, or starts affecting your sleep, mood or daily life, it may help to talk with someone you trust or a professional.

No account, no name, and you can leave whenever you like.
