New to a city

When you’ve just moved to a new city, it’s okay to take it slowly

Maybe you stepped off the train with two suitcases and had to study the subway map several times before you found your new place. Maybe the new job or new school has already started, and the days are busy enough, but in the evening you come back to a rented room so quiet that the only sound is you. Or maybe you wanted to go out this weekend and realized there was no one in your phone you could ask. The shop downstairs, the accents on the street, even the takeout still feel unfamiliar, and now and then you suddenly miss your old city and wonder whether moving was the right call.

Not feeling at home yet doesn’t mean you chose wrong

In a new place the familiar people, streets and routines all disappear at once, so feeling lonely, unsettled, homesick and unsure about the future is a very natural response. Getting used to a city usually takes months. It isn’t that you are too fragile or that this place isn’t right for you, only that everything is still slowly becoming familiar. You have already taken a hard step, and it is fine to still be on the way.

In the Forest Cabin, give yourself somewhere to land

Outside the Forest Cabin window is a quiet stretch of woods, and the lamp inside stays on, and nobody here asks where you are from or who you know. Write on a bedside note one thing you have missed most these past few days, then one small place in the new city you have started to like, and fold it away so it stays only on your device. Tomorrow you might go back to that place for a while, or call an old friend. If this loneliness keeps you from sleeping, leaves you without energy for a long time, or makes you want to go out less and less, it may help to talk with someone you trust or a professional.

No account, no name, and you can leave whenever you like.
